Two men arrested for digital scams totaling over RD$128,000

Santo Domingo.– Agents from the Cyber Police Area Directorate, attached to the Central Investigation Directorate (Dicrim), arrested two men accused of their alleged participation in electronic scams that reportedly caused losses exceeding RD$128,000.

The detainees were identified as Melvin José Collado Brito and Yeison Avelino, who were arrested via judicial warrants as part of investigations related to fraud committed through digital platforms.

According to the National Police, Collado Brito is being investigated for allegedly receiving RD$100,000 obtained through a scam executed via WhatsApp, in which a victim was convinced to make deposits with the promise of obtaining high returns through fake investments. Meanwhile, Avelino allegedly received RD$28,000 from a fraud under the phishing modality, which included an unauthorized transfer and irregular fund withdrawals.

The Cyber Police reported that both will be placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor’s Office for the corresponding procedures and reiterated the call to the population to remain alert to unbelievable investment offers, promises of easy money, and messages requesting personal information or deposits through social networks and messaging applications.
