Ukrainian drone manufacturer tests new long-range weapon against Russia

SkyFall, the Ukrainian defense technology company, has developed a long-range strike weapon that is being tested in operations against Russia, as Kyiv intensifies its campaign, which has caused serious logistical problems for Moscow.

The fixed-wing, propeller-driven munition has a wingspan of approximately 3.5 meters (11 feet) and a range of at least 600 kilometers, the company announced on Monday at the Farnborough International Airshow. It will be fully operational within months, the company added.

SkyFall is also in the final testing phase of a new, faster version of its P-1 Sun drone, designed to intercept rudimentary jet-powered Shahed-type cruise missiles, which Russia has used in attacks against Ukraine in a game of strategy and countermeasures. The company’s goal for the new P-1 is to achieve full autonomy, with an operator only needing to select the target on a monitor.

With a top speed of 370 kilometers per hour (230 mph), the “Jetkiller” model can catch up to the fastest Russian weapons when they slow down near the final phase of their attack.

The X-wing model interceptor reaches higher speeds thanks to a slightly smaller warhead than the standard P-1 (500 grams versus 800 grams) and improved engines and other components, according to a company representative.

The enhanced AI takes final control of the interceptor once the human pilot designates a target, Konovalov explained. It is designed to work with almost any satellite communications system, including SpaceX’s Starlink, allowing the operator to be in a remote location.

Low-cost interceptors for cheap weapons like the Shahed have become a priority for many countries, given that thousands of these munitions have been used in the Iran war. Europe is seeking to create a “drone barrier” to prevent these types of attacks, and Poland has allocated 4.3 billion dollars to its own project.

SkyFall won the final round of the Pentagon’s Drone Dominance competition this year along with its British collaborator Skycutter, which resulted in an order for more than 2,500 drones and allowed it to move on to the next phase of the competition.
