“We are very satisfied with the public’s love”: Karla and Javier after the premiere of “RENT”

Santo Domingo.- Prior to tonight’s presentation of the musical RENT at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, we spoke with Javier Grullón and Karla Fatule, who shared how special it has been to bring to the stage one of the most dreamed-of projects of their careers as theater producers. For Javier, who also plays Mark, the materialization of this production has been deeply emotional, not only for its artistic value, but also for the audience’s response in its first weekend. “We are super excited, really, it has been a dream come true to do this production in the Dominican Republic. “Rent” represents one of our favorite musicals, one of the reasons why we are artists is “Rent” and really having it today, here performing to a full house, is a dream come true. There are times when you visualize a project of this magnitude, but you cannot predict that people will come to see it or that the project will turn out to be the magnitude you want, but we are very pleased with the attendance, with the staging, with the critics and it has been wonderful”, said Javier Grullón.

For her part, Karla Fatule, who plays Mimi in this production, highlighted the emotional weight of finally presenting a play that had been waiting for years for the ideal moment to take the stage. “To be honest, saying that one thing was the most exciting would be an understatement, because as Javi said, it may sound repetitive, but this is a dream of ours since we were old enough to reason. My dream role I’ve had since I was about 13 years old, and to be able to do it in this country, with this social burden, with such a controversial topic that began in the late 80s and that still in 2026 remains taboo, is a very big social responsibility. We feel very satisfied with all the love with which it has been received both at the level of our team and the public”, said Karla Fatule. The musical, with book, music, and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, tells the story of a group of young artists in New York who face realities such as poverty, HIV/AIDS, identity, love, and survival, addressing social issues that continue to be relevant today.

In this staging, figures such as Héctor Aníbal, Tony Almont, Techy Fatule, Guille Martín, Nico Clínico and Laura Rivera participate, along with a cast of more than 25 artists, under the general direction of Waddys Jáquez. The play will continue to be presented tomorrow at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, as part of its first weekend in theaters, while on May 8th, by popular demand, a new performance has been opened for the public who have not been able to enjoy this acclaimed production.
