Abinader bets on greater regional integration after Lula’s reelection in Brazil

The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, expressed this Sunday his willingness to continue promoting Latin American integration together with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, after he secured reelection for a fourth presidential term in Brazil.
The Dominican president took advantage of the Brazilian election results to send a message of support for regional cooperation, expressing his interest in maintaining joint work during the next four years of the Workers’ Party (PT) leader’s government.
Through his account on the social network X, Abinader congratulated the South American leader and acknowledged the participation of Brazilian citizens in an electoral process he described as civic and participatory.

Abinader highlights the importance of Latin American integration
In his message, the Dominican head of state expressed his wish that Lula’s new presidential term will allow for continued progress toward a Latin America with higher levels of integration and prosperity.
“May we continue working together in this renewed four-year term for a more integrated and prosperous Latin America,” Abinader stated in his post.
The statement highlights the Dominican Government’s interest in continuing dialogue and collaboration with Brazil, one of the main economies in Latin America and an actor of considerable influence in the region’s political and economic relations.
Likewise, the Dominican president acknowledged the democratic exercise carried out during the elections, in which millions of Brazilians went to the polls to decide on the continuity of the current president.

Lula secures a fourth term after a tight election
Abinader’s congratulation came after Lula da Silva managed to prevail over opposition senator Flávio Bolsonaro in the second round of the presidential elections held this October 25th.

According to the official results released with 99.98% of the ballot boxes counted, the Brazilian leader obtained 51.78% of the valid votes, compared to the 48.22% reached by his opponent.
The result will allow Lula to assume a fourth presidential term, the second consecutively, consolidating his tenure as one of the most influential figures in contemporary Brazilian politics.
His next term of government will begin on January 5, 2027, in a scenario marked by internal political polarization and expectations regarding the role that Brazil will play in the future of Latin America.
The Dominican president’s reaction joins the messages of other leaders in the region who have recognized Lula’s electoral victory and expressed their willingness to maintain cooperative relations with his administration.
