Lula states that his reelection represents a victory for democracy in Brazil

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that his reelection this Sunday, October 25, represents a citizen endorsement of democracy in Brazil, after prevailing in the runoff against opposition senator Flávio Bolsonaro and securing a fourth presidential term.

During his first statements after the results were known, the president maintained that citizen participation was decisive for his victory and especially thanked the young people and senior citizens who went to the polling stations.

Lula asserted that his campaign managed to convey the importance of the vote as an instrument to preserve democratic institutions, in a contest marked by political confrontation and accusations of disinformation between the main candidates.

Lula reelection and disinformation

The president also questioned the disinformation campaigns carried out during the electoral process and pointed out that social media played an important role in the dissemination of political content.

During his speech, he described the results as a defeat for denialism and lies, while accusing sectors linked to his opponent of resorting to false information during the campaign.

Likewise, he denounced alleged foreign interference through digital platforms and announced his intention to promote measures to regulate the large technology companies operating in Brazil.

According to Lula, crimes committed in the digital environment should be treated equivalently to those that occur outside the internet. He also questioned whether large technology companies should be able to influence electoral processes.

The allegations of foreign interference correspond to statements made by the re-elected president and do not, by themselves, constitute independent verification of those accusations.

Lula reelection and governability

Despite the political differences that marked the campaign, Lula stated that his next government will work for the entire population, including those who supported Flávio Bolsonaro.

The leader of the Workers’ Party (PT) acknowledged that he will face a Congress with significant conservative representation, but assured that he will respect the composition of the Legislative Branch elected by the citizens.

Brazil and its sovereignty

Another of the issues addressed by the president was national sovereignty and Brazil’s position regarding the main international powers.

Lula reiterated that his country must maintain autonomy in its political and economic decisions, and rejected any attempt at subordination to foreign interests.

The president defended a foreign policy based on respect for Brazilian sovereignty, in an international context marked by trade tensions and differences between the main economic blocs.

Lula reelection and results

The Brazilian president secured his reelection after reversing the results of the first round, held on October 4th, when Flávio Bolsonaro held a lead over the incumbent.

According to the electoral update released with 99.98% of the polling stations counted, Lula reached 51.78% of the valid votes, compared to 48.22% for Bolsonaro, which allowed him to secure his stay in the Presidency for the 2027-2030 term.

The victory will allow the leader, who will turn 81 on October 27, to serve his fourth presidential term and his second consecutive one since his return to power in 2023.

After learning the results, Lula promised to dedicate his next term to strengthening social policies, improving public security, and addressing the country’s main economic challenges.
