SANTO DOMINGO, DR. – The Dominican Council of Evangelical Unity (CODUE), through its president, Feliciano Lacen, made an energetic call to the Legislative Branch not to exclude civil society or the active sectors of the nation from the reform process of Social Security Law 87-01.
While Feliciano Lacen acknowledged that it is the constitutional responsibility of the National Congress to make, modify, and approve laws, he emphasized that the country cannot continue to allow the demands of the citizenry to be ignored, especially in such sensitive legislation. “We cannot continue with a law that seems like an enemy to those who should be the true representatives and beneficiaries of it,” he stated.
The president of CODUE warned that any attempt at modification carried out behind closed doors, without the consensus of social sectors, is destined to fail. He described the current regulatory framework as an “unfair business” where the main partner, which is the people, bears the brunt, while Health Risk Administrators (ARS) and Pension Fund Administrators (AFP) retain the greatest privileges.

“Under the framework of this law, the Dominican people feel squeezed, as if we were trapped in a fruit juicer,” lamented Feliciano Lacen.
