Christa Pike is conscious and speaking, attorneys say

Christa Pike, the Tennessee woman who survived a failed execution last week, is conscious and able to speak, according to her attorneys.
“Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains uncertain, but at minimum, we anticipate a long recovery,” attorneys Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason said in a statement.
Pike, 50, remains hospitalized after surviving the administration of two lethal doses of pentobarbital during the failed execution on September 30. She remains handcuffed to a stretcher in intensive care and under police custody.
The failed execution was the second in Tennessee this year. Governor Bill Lee subsequently suspended all scheduled executions in the state for the remainder of 2026.
The developments were followed by the resignation of Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada on Saturday.
Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for the 1995 murder of fellow student Colleen Slemmer. She was set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.
