Santo Domingo — The National District Attorney’s Office confirmed the opening of an investigation into defamation complaints and alleged blackmail involving communicators and public figures in the Dominican Republic, a process that had already been anticipated a month ago by De Último Minuto after receiving information from an anonymous source.
According to a public statement from the Attorney General’s Office, the Public Ministry is examining recent cases in which several communicators are pointed out, including Ángel Martínez, Ingrid Jorge, Claudia Pérez (“La Tora”), Luis Alfredo Cabrera (“Kapulet”), José Maracallo and Fernando Peña, for alleged actions of discredit and pressure through digital platforms. Among the complaints is the one presented by the Minister of Interior and Police, Faride Raful, who claims to have been defamed by some of those mentioned.

The lead prosecutor, Rosalba Ramos, indicated that the investigation seeks to identify patterns of behavior that may constitute blackmail schemes or misuse of the media to exert pressure on officials and citizens. Ramos stressed that freedom of expression is a fundamental right, but warned that it should not be used as a tool of threat or extortion.
In the statement, the Prosecutor’s Office notes that in recent months there has been an increase in cross-complaints, defamation lawsuits, and allegations of blackmail in the media. According to the institution, this situation has raised concerns about the impact of these practices on public trust and the integrity of democratic debate.
The Public Ministry reiterated that it will act in accordance with the law to protect both freedom of the press and the right of citizens not to be subjected to defamatory campaigns or media pressure. The prosecution warned that it will continue with the investigations and will take the necessary measures to stop the use of the media as a mechanism of discredit or intimidation.
