Public Ministry arrests 11 police officers linked to the death of five men in Santiago

Santo Domingo.- The Public Ministry arrested this Tuesday eleven members of the National Police accused of their alleged involvement in the death of five men during a confusing incident that occurred on September 10, in a shopping center in the La Barranquita sector, in Santiago. The arrested agents belong to the Complex Crimes Investigation Department and the Cibao Central Regional Sub-Directorate of Investigation, both of the National Police. Among those arrested are officers of different ranks, including two majors and a captain. The victims were identified as Edward Bernardo Peña Rodríguez, Carlos Enrique Guzmán Navarro (alias Charly or Charli Chasc), José Vladimir Valerio Estévez, Elvis Antonio Martínez Rodríguez and Julio Alberto Gómez, who died while receiving medical attention at the Dr. Cabral y Báez Hospital, in Santiago. The arrests took place within the framework of an investigation ordered by the Attorney General of the Republic, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, and headed by the Deputy Attorney, Wilson Camacho, head of the General Directorate of Prosecution, along with the chief prosecutor of Santiago, Quirsa Abreu.

The event occurred amidst an armed confrontation between the agents and a group of civilians, in a plaza located on Olympic Avenue, in the La Barranquita sector. In the exchange of gunfire, Corporal Yohandy Encarnación, one of those arrested, was also injured. The Public Ministry indicated that it will continue with the investigations to determine the exact circumstances of the event and act in accordance with the results of the investigation.
