Santo Domingo.– Citizen complaints in Las Terrenas and nearby areas do not cease. The population is in a state of anxiety due to the alleged disproportionate use of force by agents of the National Police, a pattern of conduct that, according to those affected, has intensified in recent months.
One of the most worrying episodes occurred at the closing of the
Patron Saint Festivities, when police officers stormed the celebration area, throwing tear gas bombs. The action affected both the owners of booths who were already leaving to return the next day and citizens who were peacefully leaving the place.
This incident, far from being isolated, reflects what many describe as “police abuse in broad daylight.”
Outrage is on the rise. Local residents, along with members of the foreign community, have raised their voices to firmly demand the immediate change of the police force in Las Terrenas. The objective is clear: to restore tranquility, security, and trust in the public service.
Municipal authorities have channeled these requests to higher authorities; however, so far, no official response has been received from either the director general of the National Police or the Minister of Interior and Police, Faride Raful. This institutional silence is perceived by many as a lack of willingness to address the crisis.
The community of Las Terrenas calls on the national media to highlight this situation, and reiterates its demand that immediate measures be taken to guarantee respect for fundamental rights in one of the country’s most emblematic tourist destinations.
