“Macho”, main suspect in the murder of a garbage truck driver in Santiago, extradited from Jamaica

Jhovanny de Jesús Metz Cruz, alias “Macho”, was extradited to the Dominican Republic this Tuesday. He is identified as the main suspect in the death of a garbage truck driver, who was chased and attacked by a group of motorcyclists in the parking lot of the Santiago Palace of Justice in April of this year.

Metz Cruz arrived in the country through the Las Américas International Airport, coming from Jamaica, where he had been detained after allegedly fleeing the Dominican Republic due to his connection to the crime, according to a source linked to the investigation of the high-profile case

The defendant is expected to be transferred to Santiago in the coming hours to answer to justice for the death of Deivy Carlos Abreu Quezada, 41, who died as a result of stab wounds.

Chase ended in tragedy

The incident occurred in April 2026 and began on Circunvalación Sur Avenue, in the Bermúdez district, when several motorcyclists allegedly attempted to force the driver to stop the garbage collection truck.

Faced with the attitude he perceived as violent, Abreu Quezada continued on his way, but was pursued for several kilometers until reaching the parking lot of the Palace of Justice, where he allegedly sought refuge.

However, the group allegedly caught up with him and assaulted him with blows and a bladed weapon, causing the injuries that subsequently led to his death.

Seven people are in pre-trial detention

For this case, seven people are in preventive detention as a coercive measure, while the arrival of Metz Cruz in the country opens a new stage in the judicial process for the worker’s death.

Among the background information attributed to the suspect, there is also another case related to an alleged assault with firearms against a member of the National Police, in which he was reportedly declared in contempt of court after failing to appear before the justice system.

The extradition of “Macho” will allow judicial authorities to continue the corresponding proceedings to determine his criminal responsibility in the crime that shocked Santiago.
