Accident in Santiago: woman dies after motorcycle is struck by bus

Husband and son were injured in the impact

Santiago.- A Santiago accident left a 31-year-old woman dead this Wednesday morning, after the motorcycle she was riding on with her husband and her minor son was struck by a student transport bus.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Estrella Sadhalá and 27 de Febrero avenues, in the vicinity of the Presidente Antonio Guzmán Fernández government building, in Santiago.

The victim was identified as Marilandy Jiménez Taveras, who was heading to her workplace along with her relatives aboard a black Tauro Turbo motorcycle when the collision occurred.

According to accounts gathered at the scene, the motorcycle allegedly crossed the intersection when the traffic light was red. This version must be confirmed by the authorities through the investigation of the Santiago accident.

The bus involved was traveling along Estrella Sadhalá Avenue and, according to preliminary information, its driver was heading from the Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes Polytechnic Institute to pick up students.

Husband and son injured in the accident

The crash caused the immediate death of Jiménez Taveras, while her husband and son were injured and transported by units of the 9-1-1 National Emergency and Security Attention System to the Maternal and Child Hospital of Santiago, where they are receiving medical assistance.

A witness who was in the vicinity described the scene:

“I heard a ‘bang’ and immediately went out, but by the time I arrived at the scene of the accident, the young woman had already passed away”.

The witness further stated that this intersection represents a point of concern for those who frequently travel through the area.

Authorities investigate

The bus driver, whose identity is unknown, was detained by agents of the General Directorate of Traffic and Land Transportation Safety (Digesett) and remains under investigation to establish the exact circumstances in which the collision occurred.

As family members and loved ones face the impact of the tragedy, members of the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) transported the woman’s body to perform the corresponding autopsy.

The authorities must determine the circumstances of the accident and establish the corresponding responsibilities.
