The official highlighted that, due to the characteristics of the storm Melissa — as explained by Civil Defense, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) and the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) —, it is a phenomenon that moves slowly, so the monitoring work is carried out minute by minute. Likewise, it reported that, as the social arm of the Government, the regional teams of the Supérate Social Development Directorate (DDSS) are deployed in the territory to provide specialized attention to the Supérate families, many of whom reside in vulnerable areas to this type of phenomenon. For his part, Bernardo Rodríguez, deputy director of Civil Defense, reported that some 5,000 volunteers have been deployed throughout the national territory to provide the support demanded by the population. As of Thursday afternoon, 49 people remained sheltered in the two shelters enabled in the province of San Juan. In the meeting, Colonel Rubén Frontal Carrán, director of the SINI platform, also participated; Delfín Rodríguez, deputy director in charge of Civil Defense Operations; as well as representatives of the DDSS emergency team. Officials reiterated the call for the population to remain attentive to the official information issued by the corresponding organizations.“This is a component that is giving us useful information for the measures that we from the State must take, and also so that Civil Defense can identify the number of people affected and their level of poverty,” Reyes expressed during the SINI meeting, held at the Civil Defense headquarters.
