Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey defended Haitian immigrants with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) while criticizing President Donald Trump’s immigration policies during an interview on Morning Joe.
“We have about 45,000 Haitian TPS holders in my state. You know where a lot of them are working? In our hospitals and nursing homes. They are probably the caregiver taking care of your parents in their home right now,” Healey said.
The Democratic governor made the remarks while discussing the Protect Act, a new law she signed that her office says strengthens protections for immigrants in Massachusetts. According to Healey’s office, the legislation is intended to limit certain ICE enforcement activities in locations such as courthouses, schools and hospitals.
Healey described the Trump administration’s immigration policies as “fundamentally stupid” and argued that many Haitian TPS holders play an essential role in the state’s healthcare workforce.
