Petro regrets that the OAS has not been able to “stop the missiles” of the US against Venezuela

Washington.– Colombian President Gustavo Petro lamented this Thursday in Washington that the Organization of American States (OAS) has not been able to “stop the missiles” of the United States against Venezuela, referring to the operation of last January 3 in Caracas in which Nicolás Maduro was arrested.

“The OAS, which is the multilateral coalition in America, could not stop the missiles in the Caribbean, could not stop the missiles in Caracas. We are in a changing era”, expressed Petro while giving the master lecture ‘The role of Latin America in the global environmental crisis’ at Georgetown University.

In the conference, which marks the closing of Petro’s four-day visit to Washington in which he met with U.S. President Donald Trump, the Colombian president pointed out that Caracas, “where (the Liberator Simón) Bolívar was born, missiles fell, regardless of what we think of the regime that was there.” The Venezuelan capital, expressed, became the “first Latin American city in all of world history to be bombed”.

“If civilization falls, what follows is barbarism. We could give barbarism other names, (like) World War III, for example. Are we close? We all feel it in our skin, of course the danger is near,” Petro added.

The Colombian president, one of the greatest defenders of the Palestinian cause, also questioned “what is the point of the United Nations then” in the face of everything that is happening in the Gaza Strip.

“Everything we built as a civilization, international treaties, international humanitarian law… what was it for? The genocidal (referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) is at large, the arrest warrant (international against him) doesn’t work, justice cannot operate. What we build today is useless,” Petro expressed.

In addition to the meeting with Trump at the White House and his conference at Georgetown University, Petro gave a speech on Wednesday before the OAS during his trip to Washington, met with businessmen from the cocoa sector and with the Colombian community in the American capital, among other activities.
