Colombian President Gustavo Petro is expected to travel to Cuba on Friday for an official visit aimed at expressing solidarity with the Cuban people as the island continues to face economic and energy challenges.
During the visit, Petro is scheduled to meet with Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, just one week before President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella is sworn into office on Aug. 7.
The trip comes as Cuba continues to grapple with recurring power outages, fuel shortages and limited access to essential supplies.
The visit also highlights a sharp contrast in foreign policy with the incoming administration. President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella has announced plans to close Colombia’s embassy in Havana and end diplomatic relations with Cuba after taking office.
