The U.S. denounces that the Nicaraguan “dictatorship” has vetoed its new ambassador

The OAS convened the foreign ministers of the Americas this Friday to address the situation in Nicaragua after Ortega announced that there will be no more elections in his country

Washington.- The United States Government denounced this Friday that the “dictatorship” of Nicaragua, led by the president, Daniel Ortega, and his wife, Rosario Murillo, has vetoed its new ambassador to the Central American country, Natasha Franceschi.

“Murillo and Ortega have consistently closed the door to productive dialogue. Just yesterday, they rejected our highly qualified ambassador, which demonstrates their lack of diplomacy,” stated the Undersecretary of the State Department, Christopher Landau, during an extraordinary meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) regarding Nicaragua.

The U.S. Senate confirmed Franceschi on September 30 as the new ambassador to Nicaragua, where the United States has not had an ambassador since 2023.

The OAS convened the foreign ministers of the Americas this Friday to address the situation in Nicaragua after Ortega announced that there will be no more elections in his country, but only seven of the 34 member states sent their foreign ministers.

Landau, who spoke on behalf of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, recalled that Nicaragua should have held elections this year and stressed that the situation in the country “endangers the peace and security” of Central America and the rest of the American continent.

The undersecretary maintained that the Nicaraguan government “facilitates” illegal immigration by engaging with “non-hemispheric” actors, in an apparent reference to China or Russia, which, he claimed, are training the country’s police and sharing intelligence with the “machinery of repression.”

Landau considered that these international actors are not only “propping up the dictatorship,” but are using Nicaragua as a “springboard” to influence the region.
