The United States imposes financial sanctions on the president of Cuba and a son of Raúl Castro
The United States imposed financial sanctions on Thursday, June 4, on the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and on some individuals and entities on the island, as it appears on the Department of the Treasury’s website
As of 21 GMT on Thursday, the Cuban government had not issued a statement regarding the sanctions, which were also directed at four other individuals and five entities, including the Cuban Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces.
Díaz – Canel , 60, has been president of the Caribbean country since he succeeded Raúl Castro, brother of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, in 2018.
This is a new measure from Washington to intensify pressure on the island’s leaders following the energy blockade and the murder accusation against Raul Castro by the U.S. justice system.
In parallel to the publication of the sanctions, Donald Trump declared to journalists that the United States wants Cuba “to be a well-governed country”.

Last month, the U.S. government imposed sanctions on 11 Cuban officials, including the country’s Minister of Communications, several military leaders, and its main intelligence agency.
The United States also accused Raúl Castro of murder for his alleged involvement in a 1996 incident in which Cuban planes shot down aircraft operated by a group of Cuban exiles.
