Trump announces immediate energy truce between Russia and Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on October 11 that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an energy truce, effective immediately, amid growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over energy agreements with Moscow.

“With immediate effect, an energy truce is declared in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have reached an agreement. Don’t break it!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The announcement followed an energy agreement between Russia and the United States involving diesel supplies, which has tested relations between Washington and Kyiv.

On October 9, Trump said the two countries had agreed for Russia to supply hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel fuel to U.S. and global markets. He also announced a temporary suspension of sanctions on Russian diesel shipments. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak subsequently said Moscow would immediately begin lifting its ban on diesel exports.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded critically to the agreement in a lengthy message on Telegram, arguing that such ties with Russia “will bring neither peace nor any benefit to the civilized world.” He added: “Peace never comes through weakness.”

Ukraine-U.S. talks in Miami

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian delegation met with U.S. negotiators in Miami on Friday. After eight hours of discussions, the meeting reportedly broke down after the Ukrainian delegation learned of Trump’s announcement on the diesel agreement with Russia. Ukrainian diplomats ended their trip early.

“It seemed like a trap […] To be honest, everyone was stunned. It looked like a trap,” a senior Ukrainian official said.

During the meeting, U.S. representatives also reportedly increased pressure on Ukraine to refrain from attacking Russian oil refineries. White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner allegedly threatened to stop providing Kyiv with vital intelligence.

The energy truce announcement comes amid strained relations between Ukraine and the United States over Washington’s engagement with Moscow and the terms of potential efforts to end the war.
