Washington.- U.S. President Donald Trump stated this Wednesday that Washington and Tehran could reach a peace agreement “over the weekend”.
“If it happens -and it may not happen, who knows?-, but if it happens, it could occur over the weekend,” the president assured when asked by the media during an event in the Oval Office about the progress of the negotiations to reach an agreement that would end the conflict that the U.S. and Israel began on February 28.
When asked about the ballistic missiles launched by Iran against targets in neighboring countries, including Kuwait airport, and the American response, which attacked a military ground control station on the Iranian island of Qeshm, Trump dismissed that these were actions that constitute a breach of the bilateral truce in effect since April 8.
“There were some incidents, it wasn’t a big deal, but we had it under control; we nipped it in the bud very quickly, just as the best army in the world does,” he added.

“However, some people might argue that (the Iranians) were slightly provoked, given that we had taken a forceful measure for a different reason. So, in a way, they were responding in reciprocity,” added the New York tycoon in apparent reference to the attack on ships that were trying to reach Iranian ports.
Iran’s nuclear program, key to a deal with Trump
Trump already said last week that he would make a final decision regarding the Iranian draft for a peace plan, but he apparently sent the text back to Tehran with amendments relating mainly to the dismantling of the Iranian nuclear program.
In an interview published this very Wednesday, the leader asserted that Iran has agreed not to develop nuclear weapons, although at the same time he acknowledged that the Islamic Republic could “change its mind” regarding an agreement to end the war.
