Paulino leads DR delegation at World Athletics Championships
TOKYO, JAPAN. The information was provided by the president of the Dominican Athletics Federation, engineer Alexis Peguero, who is accompanying the national team at the World Championships.
In addition to Paulino, Olympic medalists Lidio Feliz in the 400 meters and Alexander Ogando in the 100 and 200 meters will also be present. Liranyi Alonzo, after a great year on the track, will debut in the 200 meters.
Don Gregorio’s native and current Olympic champion, Marileidy Paulino, this time, will not only seek her second gold medal in a row at the World Championships, but will also try to join the exclusive circle formed by the Australian Cathy Freeman (1997 and 1999) as the only ones who repeated titles in the 400-meter dash.
The president of the Dominican Athletics Federation, engineer Alexis Peguero, proclaimed from here that the delegation is very optimistic about the work that the Dominican athletes will do. “We are confident that we will return with medals to the country,” he emphasized.
“Here are the best athletes in the world in each modality and our athletes have arrived with good physical and mental preparation to give their best in each phase,” said Peguero, who said he has the support of the Ministry of Sports, the Creso Group and the Adidas brand.
In addition, he said that he is making contacts with many presidents of Federations from different countries with the aim of reaching mutual agreements that will be helpful for national athletics.
Competition Days
Paulino, 28 years old, will go out on the court this Sunday the 14th to seek his place in the semifinals at 7:25 at night (Tokyo time), but in the Dominican Republic it will be 6:25 in the morning.
If he succeeds, as the whole country expects, Paulino will return to the track in the semi-final next Tuesday at 8:05, Dominican time, where he will be looking for his ticket to defend his double World champion crown.
On Thursday 18th in Japan, the grand final would be on Thursday 18th at 10:24 PM Japanese time, 9:24 PM Dominican time on Friday 18th. The Dominican won silver in Eugene (USA) in 2022 and gold in Budapest (Hungary) in 2023.
The 2020 Japan Olympic medalist, Alexander Ogando, will begin the preliminary competitions in the 100 meters, at 11:30 am tomorrow Saturday in Japan (10:30 pm Dominican time this Friday).
This Saturday, Liranyi Alonso will also compete at 5:55 in the morning. The athlete comes from winning gold and silver in the past Junior Pan American Games.
On his side, the 2020 Olympic medalist, Lidio Feliz, will make his debut at the World Championships next Wednesday in the 200 meters at 7:10 pm in Tokyo, 6:10 am in the Dominican Republic.
