- 1416: the Catholic Church burns Jan Hus alive for defending the religious reformer Jan Hus.
- 1431: in Rouen (France), the English burn the young French saint Joan of Arc alive on charges of heresy.
- 1498: from Spain, Christopher Columbus and his sailors begin their third voyage to the American continent.
- 1837: in Valparaíso (Chile), the priest Juan Crisóstomo Liausú founds the Colegio de los Sagrados Corazones de Valparaíso, currently the oldest private educational establishment in Latin America.
- 1879: the City’s Gilmores Garden in New York is renamed Madison Square Garden by the millionaire William Vanderbilt and is opened to the public on 26th Street and Madison Avenue.
- 1906: the Simplon Tunnel in the Alps is inaugurated, which facilitates communication between Italy and Switzerland.
- 1922: in Washington the Lincoln Memorial is inaugurated.
- 1928: the Nicaraguan Academy of the Language is founded in Nicaragua.
- 1934: The United States eliminates the Platt Amendment and grants full independence to Cuba.
- 1969: in Ecuador the television channel TC Televisión is founded, the third television channel in that country.
- 1971: The United States launches the Mariner 9 spacecraft bound for Mars.
- 2002: the removal of debris caused by the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York officially concludes.
- 2018: in Nicaragua, the Mother’s Day Massacre occurs.
