Santo Domingo. The sustained growth of tourism in the Dominican Republic continues to be closely linked to the strengthening of its air connectivity network, a key element for maintaining the flow of visitors and reaching new tourist arrival goals.
The incorporation of new routes, the increase in frequencies, and the participation of more airlines have been part of the strategy to consolidate the country as one of the main destinations in the Caribbean. However, recent changes in the market have generated concern among travelers and sector stakeholders.
Among these movements are the suspension of JetBlue‘s direct flights between Newark and Santo Domingo, as well as the cancellation of Wingo‘s route between Bogotá and Punta Cana. Added to this is the definitive exit of Spirit Airlines from operations in Dominican territory.
The reduction of these options could translate into less competition on certain routes, which opens the debate about a possible increase in ticket prices and a decrease in alternatives for passengers.
