New York.-At least five people died after an Amazon cargo plane crashed after veering off the runway upon landing at Miami International Airport, authorities confirmed.
In a press conference, Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz confirmed that five people died in the accident and five others were injured and transported to the hospital.
Three of the injured are in critical condition, reported Erica Benitez, chief of staff for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, at the press conference.
The plane collided with several vehicles and more than 60 units from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue were dispatched to the scene of the incident, according to the department’s report on Facebook.
Benitez highlighted that, upon their arrival, the professionals focused on extinguishing the fire and saving several victims who were trapped in vehicles struck by the aircraft.

The affected aircraft is a Boeing 767-300 operated by 21 Air that veered off the runway around 14:00 local time (20:00 GMT) and was arriving from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which has opened an investigation into the incident.

Similarly, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) noted on X that it has sent a go-team to investigate the accident.
Kelly Nantel, an Amazon spokesperson, indicated to NBC News that the company is “working closely with local authorities to understand exactly what happened”: “At this time, our top priority is the safety, well-being, and care of all those involved“.

All airport runways and taxiways remain closed and all takeoffs and landings scheduled for today have been suspended, the airport itself reported on its X profile.
