Santo Domingo.- Investigative journalist Camila García Durán stated this Wednesday that the tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub must become a turning point for Dominican society, as she believes the events highlight the need for a more vigilant and demanding citizenry regarding situations that compromise collective safety.
During her participation in the panel “The boundary between guilt and eventual intent: a criminal and social look at the Jet Set case”, held at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), the communicator expressed that the country must reflect on its role regarding institutional failures and the lack of supervision that can lead to tragedies.
“If this doesn’t make us all change, not just business owners, politicians, authorities, everyone, so that we are not such a passive society, then nothing will, nothing, absolutely nothing,” he stated.

García Durán also defended the release of images captured by the establishment’s security cameras, explaining that the decision was made in consensus with the victims’ families, who understood that the truth about what happened had to come to light, despite the pain of reliving those moments.
As he recounted, before making the recordings public, he evaluated the emotional impact they might generate, but ultimately the judgment of the affected family members prevailed, who considered that the images constituted an important element to understand the magnitude of the events and support the pursuit of justice.
