“Questions grow over inclusion of candidate in Humanities runoff despite interpretation of regulations”

Santo Domingo. -Sectors linked to the electoral process of the Faculty of Humanities at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) expressed concern regarding the inclusion of a candidate on the runoff ballot, considering that such a decision could contradict the Regulations for the Election of University Authorities.

In accordance with article 50, letter c, of the electoral regulations, when no candidate obtains an absolute majority in the first round of voting, the runoff must be held with the participation of “only those two (2) candidates who have obtained the most votes in their favor”.

Various voices consulted maintain that this provision has raised questions about the final composition of the ballot for the runoff, especially after the resignation of one of the candidates with the most votes and the public endorsement that he offered to another candidacy.

Legal experts and members of the university community consulted believe that the Central Electoral Commission should provide a detailed legal explanation regarding the grounds for its decision, in order to ensure the transparency of the process and avoid subsequent questioning.

Meanwhile, anticipation is growing among teachers and students regarding a possible official statement that clears up the doubts that have arisen regarding the interpretation of the regulations and preserves confidence in the university electoral process.
