This Tuesday, a coercive measure will be known against the directives of the Da Vinci School for the death of the girl Stephora Joseph
Santiago. – This Tuesday the coercion measure hearing against four directors of the Leonardo Da Vinci School will be known, accused of criminal responsibility in the drowning death of student Stephora Anne-Mircie Joseph, 11 years old, during a school excursion in Gurabo.
The Public Ministry requests an economic guarantee of RD$50 million for each defendant, in addition to periodic presentation, a ban on leaving the country, and electronic trackers, considering these measures “suitable and proportionate”, in accordance with article 226 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The accused are Yris del Carmen Reyes Adames (administrative director), Gisela Altagracia de las Mercedes González Estrella (general coordinator), Francisca Josefina Tavárez Vélez (counselor) and Vilma Altagracia Vargas Morel (secondary level coordinator). All of them have been incarcerated since Saturday in the jail of the Palace of Justice of Santiago.
The indictment, which exceeds 500 pages, was delivered to the plaintiff. The victim’s family lawyer, Miguel Valdemar, indicated that they are evaluating each piece of evidence to determine whether they will file new legal actions in the coming days.
The investigation, led by Deputy Prosecutor Wilson Camacho and Prosecutor Olga Diná Llaverías, establishes that 87 students participated in the excursion under the supervision of only three caregivers, without lifeguards or prior inspection of the aquatic area at the Los Caballos estate, where the tragedy occurred. The Public Ministry maintains that it has videos that show “extreme negligence” in the organization of the tour.
The case was classified as involuntary manslaughter in violation of article 319 of the Penal Code, and as abandonment and child abuse, according to Law 136-03.
In parallel, the Ministry of Education was required to inspect the educational center and determine if it maintains protocols that could violate the best interests of the child.
The death of Stephora continues to provoke social outrage and demands for justice from community organizations and the school environment, who demand that this case not go unpunished.
