Santo Domingo.- The political leader of the Modern Revolutionary Party (
PRM),
Tomás Gregorio Hernández Alberto, assured that the Dominican opposition is going through a stage of programmatic weakness, as it lacks, in his opinion, clear proposals and focuses on trying to take political advantage of any adverse situation faced by the Government.
During an interview granted to this media outlet, Hernández Alberto maintained that this reality obliges the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) to remain alert, cohesive, and strengthened, both in its internal structure and in its political discourse, in the face of an increasingly demanding scenario after several years in the exercise of power.
When evaluating the management headed by President Luis Abinader, the political leader described it as positive, highlighting significant advances in the strengthening of democracy, public ethics, and the institutional management of the Dominican State, compared to past administrations.
“The Dominican Republic had achieved economic growth, but not development nor a better distribution of wealth. Unlike the years of PLD governments, this government has made a turn in terms of ethics, transparency and democratic management”, he expressed.
When addressing the internal challenges of the PRM, Hernández pointed out that one of the main achievements of the ruling party has been maintaining cohesion, despite the differences inherent in any democratic process.
He recalled that after the first internal convention there were tensions and speeches from some leaders, but he stressed that, once the results were defined, political maturity and commitment to the party project prevailed.
“The main thing has been to avoid division. There were tough stances, as happens in all parties, but finally unity prevailed around the project that brought Luis Abinader to power,” he affirmed.
In turn, he warned that the next process will represent a decisive test for the PRM, taking into account that the current president will not be a presidential candidate, which opens the way for new aspirations within the organization.
“Comrades with sufficient merits to assume the presidential banner will come, and everyone must submit to the internal process and the consensus of the party,” he indicated.
A Different Scenario
The leader explained that the criticisms directed at the PRM should be analyzed within a different context than in the past, since the party has been in power for five years and is heading towards completing eight years of government management. He acknowledged that the year 2025 has been one of the most complex for the Abinader administration, mainly due to the impact of the economic slowdown internationally.
“It has been a difficult year, but not a bad one. The reduction in growth is a global phenomenon. While the world barely reaches 2%, the Dominican Republic remains above average,” he stated.
In that sense, he considered that the opposition has opted for a strategy of constant criticism, in the absence of a clear alternative agenda, which obliges the PRM to strengthen its narrative and its connection with the citizenry.
In a message addressed to the youth and grassroots leadership of the PRM, who are demanding greater participation and internal renewal, Hernández acknowledged that governing has not been an easy task, especially because it is a government supported by the support of multiple social and political sectors.
However, he assured that the party has learned that the exercise of power implies sacrifices when governing with responsibility and a vision of the State.
“We have understood that it is better to do things well from the State, even if it implies partisan sacrifices, if that translates into benefits for Dominicans,” he stated.
He highlighted progress in areas such as national production, economic stability, and efforts to improve the education system, although he admitted that there are flaws that must be corrected.
Beyond a Political Profile
Tomás Gregorio Hernández Alberto is an agricultural engineer, lawyer, academic, and Dominican political leader, with a long career in the public and partisan life of the country. A graduate of the Salesian Agricultural School of Moca, with a specialization in Economics and Agricultural Education from Texas A&M University, he has been a university professor, legislator, public official, and political leader at different times in the national democratic history. He is currently a prominent member of the PRM and president of the Movimiento Poder P’AL Pueblo, from where he continues to promote participatory democracy, sustainable rural development, and the inclusion of young people and the most vulnerable sectors.
