Santo Domingo.– President Luis Abinader highlighted this Monday the growth that the Dominican Republic has registered in terms of tourism and emphasized the importance of the renovated Alcázar de Colón not being seen solely as a museum, but also as a space for Dominicans to learn about their history.
During the handover ceremony of the renovated Diego Colón Viceroy Palace Museum, Abinader compared the country’s tourism performance with that of other nations in the region and noted that the Dominican Republic has managed to surpass the levels recorded before the pandemic.
Abinader said that during a recent visit to the United States he spoke with the president-elect of Peru, Keiko Fujimori, who mentioned to him that the country has not yet recovered its pre-pandemic tourism figures.
“That tells us how we have advanced and how we continue to advance,” expressed Abinader.

The president assured that the country projects to exceed 12 million visitors this year, a figure that, according to him, generates surprise among other leaders in the region.
Abinader also highlighted the historical importance of the Alcázar de Diego Colón, which he described as one of the most relevant colonial buildings in the country.
“It has been done with complete professionalism, it has been done while respecting every inch of its history,” he stated.
The head of state maintained that the goal is for the space to be enjoyed by both tourists and Dominicans themselves, especially students.
“What we want is for it to be enjoyed, for it to be learned from, for it to become not just a museum, but a museum that is also a school, a historical school,” he stated.
In that sense, Abinader called for bringing primary and secondary school students to the museum so they can learn about the country’s past and use that knowledge as part of building their future.
The president congratulated the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, and the entire team that participated in the recovery of the monument, while highlighting the importance of continuing to strengthen the Colonial City as a historical and tourist space.
