Abinader says the Edes deficit is the “biggest challenge” for his Government

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader stated this Monday that the “biggest challenge” pending for his Government is to improve collections in the state-owned electricity distribution companies. He recalled that a large part of the population receives subsidies to pay the electricity bill and that another part does not pay it.

“With the distributors we have a great challenge ahead, we have improved investment (…) electrical lines, but the Edes is the biggest challenge for the Government, to face its deficit”, said the ruler in his press conference on Mondays at the National Palace. He mentioned that there has been “significant progress” in terms of generation, and assured that by the end of his term there will be a 15% surplus in that regard in the country. He also considered the increase in the generation of renewable energies, noting that progress is being made in leaps and bounds in this field. Furthermore, he described the mental health problem in the country as “complex”, although he considered it a universal issue. Abinader once again recalled that the action committed by a man last month in an apartment complex in the Naco sector, in the capital, directly affected him, as the murdered woman was a close collaborator of the first lady, Raquel Arbaje. At this point, the Minister of Public Health, Víctor Atallah, revealed that the construction of two mental health centers will be put out to tender, in the provinces of Espaillat and Azua, as well as the implementation of a pilot plan in the emergency rooms of some hospitals with the service of psychologists.
