Chinese in Santiago asks embassy for help to return to their country after living in extreme poverty

Santiago.- A Chinese national requested urgent help this Friday from the embassy of his country to be able to return to China, after denouncing that he lives in extreme poverty conditions, going hungry and facing serious health problems in the municipal district of Santiago Oeste.

The man, identified as Xiaolong Yu, aged 66, stated that he is going through a critical situation, marked by the lack of food, economic precariousness, and medical complications derived from the diabetes he suffers from, including sores on his legs. According to what he narrated, he has been residing in the Dominican Republic for more than 30 years. He explained that he came to the country working as a cook on ships that transported goods from China to supply stores located on Duarte Avenue, in Santo Domingo. The foreigner stated that he currently lacks family and financial support, so he requested the intervention of the Chinese diplomatic authorities and humanitarian organizations to be able to return to his nation and receive medical attention.

The situation has generated concern among residents of Santiago Oeste, who consider it urgent that government institutions and diplomatic representatives intervene in the inhumane conditions in which the Chinese citizen lives. The complaint was made public by community leader and evangelical pastor Pablo Ureña, who explained that the foreigner resides in a borrowed room in deplorable conditions in the La Emboscada sector, where he survives without resources or assistance. “He told me that he is very hungry, that he is diabetic and has sores on his legs. He lives practically abandoned and needs urgent help,” Ureña expressed, referring to the situation of the Asian citizen.
