La Romana, RD.– The Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña, led the inauguration this Wednesday of the Cotoperí Solar photovoltaic complex (162.6 MWp), the largest in Central America and the Caribbean, located in Guaymate, La Romana. The project, composed of three solar plants, will generate 286 GWh of clean energy annually, avoiding the emission of more than 210,000 tons of CO₂, equivalent to planting more than five million trees.

The official emphasized that during construction, more than 600 direct and indirect jobs were generated, boosting the local economy and demonstrating the impact of the renewable sector on the development and well-being of the communities. As the president of the Investment Promotion Cabinet, she recalled that this project adds to the efforts promoted by President Luis Abinader to advance the transition towards clean sources, maintaining the stability of the national electricity system. “Today we expand the country’s renewable generation capacity and consolidate alliances that guarantee growth, sustainability and security,” she expressed. The Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, explained that the plant will produce enough energy to supply more than 95 thousand homes, reiterating that its performance confirms the confidence of investors in the Government’s energy vision. He highlighted the role of ACCIONA, JMMB and Grupo País as strategic partners of a sector that he described as competitive and stable. Cotoperí Solar is the second photovoltaic project developed by ACCIONA Energía in the country, after the inauguration of Calabaza I in 2023. The company owns 51% of the complex, while the remaining 49% belongs to Cotosolar Holding, integrated by the JMMB Sustainable Energy Fund (FES), Grupo País and other investors. The project also includes social initiatives that have benefited more than 3,500 people, through technical training, community employment, and road safety education campaigns. Likewise, in conjunction with the Centro Arcoíris and the acciona.org foundation, it promotes improvements in access to water and sanitation in Bajos de Haina, benefiting more than 4,500 residents. ACCIONA Energía is also building the Pedro Corto solar plant (82.69 MWp), which will further expand the country’s renewable infrastructure. Grupo País and the JMMB Sustainable Energy Fund maintain investments exceeding 710 MWp of installed capacity, consolidating their position as key players in the Dominican energy transition.
