A clinical trial conducted in Turkey reveals that the external application of apple cider vinegar, used in conjunction with the usual medical treatment, helps to reduce symptoms and anxiety related to appearance in people with varicose veins.

The investigation, registered in the United States National Library of Medicine and published in the scientific journal Complementary and Alternative Medicine Based on Evidence, responds to the lack of scientific evidence on this remedy that enjoys widespread popularity in the management of venous problems. In the study, 80 patients diagnosed with varicose veins participated under a controlled protocol. The research included 80 patients diagnosed with varicose veins at the cardiovascular surgery clinic of the Yeni Hayat Private Hospital. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: one applied apple cider vinegar to the affected area twice a day for a month, while the other only received conservative treatment, without additional intervention. There were no significant differences in age, gender, or clinical status between the two groups, which allowed for reliable comparison of results. The authors of the study warn that natural treatments should always be used under medical supervision. (Illustrative Image Infobae

How was apple cider vinegar applied in the clinical study?

According to the protocol, the patients in the intervention group raised the affected leg and wrapped the area with a cloth dampened in apple cider vinegar, keeping it on for thirty minutes, twice a day, for a month. This procedure was carried out under weekly telephone follow-up to check for proper application and rule out possible allergies. The evaluation method included internationally validated scales, such as the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain and the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS), applied before and after the intervention. Varicose veins are a common venous condition that can affect the quality of life of those who suffer from them. This is how changes in pain, itching, heaviness, skin pigmentation, and anxiety related to physical appearance were quantified.

These benefits could be related to the refreshing sensation that occurs on the skin when in contact with vinegar, but they are not signs of the elimination of varicose veins. According to specialists, there is no home remedy that eliminates varicose veins.

The majority of patients were overweight or obese and apple cider vinegar showed greater effectiveness in relieving discomfort

According to the National Library of Medicine, the study confirmed that the presence of overweight or obesity did not alter the positive results of apple cider vinegar in the decrease of symptoms. The evaluation showed that, although all patients improved, the difference was greater in those who added apple cider vinegar to their routine recommended by the treating physician.

This improvement encompassed both physical discomfort and aesthetic perception, without any documented risks being detected under this application protocol. Natural products are often used to support the management of chronic discomfort, but it is necessary to consult specialists before use. (Illustrative Image Infobae)

In both groups, reductions in pain, fatigue, and other symptoms associated with varicose veins were reported. However, the group that used apple cider vinegar showed greater decreases in discomfort such as cramps, leg fatigue, itching, heaviness, and changes in skin pigmentation. The authors highlight that 67.5% of the patients were overweight or obese at the beginning of the study, without this condition modifying the benefit observed with apple cider vinegar.

Complementary Therapies and Scientific Support: Apple Cider Vinegar Does Not Replace Conventional Medicine

The team led by scientist Derya Atik points out that complementary and alternative medicine is common among adults, who use products such as apple cider vinegar, garlic or aloe vera even without sufficient scientific support. Apple cider vinegar contains phenolic compounds antioxidants, pectins, and organic acids that possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The aesthetic perception of the legs can influence the emotional well-being of patients. (Illustrative Image Infobae)

Although previous research has focused on the metabolic effects of apple cider vinegar on cholesterol and blood pressure, this study represents one of the first scientific analyses on its specific external use in varicose veins.

The results suggest that it can enhance the benefits of conventional treatment, as long as medical indications are followed and precautions are taken to rule out allergies.

Supplement, not a substitute: specialists warn about responsible use

The research emphasizes that alternative treatments should not replace validated medical care. They should be used under approval and professional supervision. Experts warn that the indiscriminate use of home remedies without support or guidance can lead to serious and unwanted consequences.
