Former ambassador sentenced to 20 years for sexual abuse of his stepdaughter will work as a professor at the Bar Association

SANTO DOMINGO.– Donni Mayobanex Santana Cuevas, former ambassador of the National Border Council sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually abusing his stepdaughter from the ages of 11 to 14, was benefited last June with a work permit that allows him to work as a professor at the National School of the Bar Association (CARD). The authorization was granted by the judge of Execution of the Sentence of San Cristóbal, José Manuel Arias, who ordered that Santana Cuevas work at the CARD headquarters from Monday to Friday, while on weekends and holidays he must remain under house arrest in a residence in the National District.

The permit was possible thanks to the vice president of the Bar Association, Juan Pérez Roa, who presented himself as a labor guarantor for the convicted person, who until then was serving his sentence in the Azua 15 prison. Santana Cuevas was arrested in 2018 and a year later sentenced to 20 years in prison, a sentence that was later ratified by the “Supreme Court of Justice” after being found guilty of sexual assault against the minor. In the hearing where the request for work permit was known, an act of withdrawal of complaint issued by a relative of the victim through the Dominican Consulate in Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands was also presented, in which she claimed to have “no interest whatsoever in the case” and assured that she never formally accused the former official. The case generated public scandal from the beginning, when reports emerged that the girl was moved from school to school every time she alerted teachers about the situation of abuse she was facing at home.
