California, USA – A California judicial commission denied parole this Friday to Joseph Lyle Menéndez, convicted along with his brother Erik for the murder of their parents in 1989, a case that shocked the United States and continues to generate interest more than three decades later. According to reports from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Lyle, 57, “was denied parole for three years at his initial suitability hearing,” failing to convince the panel that he poses a reduced risk to society. The decision comes one day after his brother Erik Menéndez also received a denial of his parole request, implying that both will continue to serve their life sentences without the possibility of bail. The Menéndez Case In 1989, Lyle and Erik shot their parents, José and Kitty Menéndez, in their Beverly Hills mansion. During the trials, the brothers claimed to have been victims of years of physical and sexual abuse, while the prosecution maintained that they acted out of economic ambition, as they sought to inherit the family fortune. Finally, they were found guilty of first-degree murder in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison.
