Santo Domingo.– The spokesman for the deputies of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Amado Díaz, assured that although he understands the pressure that President Luis Abinader could feel from his family regarding the new Penal Code, he considers that he must put the needs of the country before any personal or family position.

Their statements come after First Lady Raquel Arbaje and the president’s daughters publicly joined the rejection of the Code, signing an open letter along with more than a thousand citizens and public figures, denouncing setbacks in human rights, especially with regard to the protection of women, girls, and victims of violence. Despite these concerns, Amado Díaz insists that the country urgently needs new criminal regulations to respond to the current challenges of Dominican society. “This Code comes to fill a void. We can no longer continue with a Code that does not respond to the more than 90 new forms of criminality that we face today,” he affirmed. He also highlighted that the approved project includes a one-year law vacation, which means it would not come into effect immediately, allowing time to review and correct possible flaws. “There will always be things to improve, but that can be done later. The important thing is to move forward with this legislation,” he concluded.
