The school year begins with a projected enrollment of 2.6 million students
Santo Domingo East.- The Minister of Education, Luis Miguel De Camps, called this Monday for the attention of Dominican society regarding the conditions and quality of the educational system not to be limited to the start of classes, as he led the opening of the 2026-2027 school year alongside President Luis Abinader.
During his speech, De Camps acknowledged the concerns expressed in recent weeks regarding the availability of spots, the condition of school facilities, the situation of teachers, school transportation, books, uniforms, and food, and assured that the authorities have received the observations, proposals, and criticisms with openness.

“We have received observations, concerns, but also proposals and constructive criticism. We have listened to them with openness, as is appropriate, because this is a challenge for everyone”, stated the official.”, manifestó el funcionario.
The minister considered it positive that families, media, communities, and different sectors are increasingly aware of what happens in schools, but maintained that this interest must be maintained throughout the entire academic period.
“We have an even greater challenge, and that is that this attention is not focused only on the start of classes,” stated De Camps, who urged continuing to talk about education during the coming months, including the periods of evaluations, National Tests, and the end of the school year.
He asserted that opening educational centers represents only the beginning of the challenge. “What should really occupy us is what happens inside them over the coming months,” he emphasized.

De Camps reported that the 2026-2027 school year begins with a projected enrollment of 2,686,971 students throughout the national educational system.
Of that amount, 2,084,202 students belong to the public sector, while another 602,769 are enrolled in private centers.
By level, the minister detailed that 422,518 students correspond to early childhood education; 1,197,014 to the primary level; and 869,750 to secondary. Likewise, he indicated that the adult education subsystem gathers 197,689 people.
De Camps maintained that these figures reflect the magnitude of the responsibility assumed by the educational system and highlighted the school as a fundamental space for families, communities, and the country’s development.
The official opening ceremony of the new school year is taking place at the Espejo La Milagrosa Primary School, located in the La Ureña sector, Santo Domingo East, led by President Luis Abinader and the Minister of Education.

The Dominican educational system begins the 2026-2027 period with a series of actions aimed at improving school conditions and strengthening teacher preparation. The incorporation of computer and communications laboratories also seeks to expand technological training opportunities, especially in polytechnics and Technical Professional modality centers. According to De Camps, these initiatives are part of the efforts to strengthen education and prepare students for new demands.
The return to the classrooms also represents a challenge for families, who resume their routines and accompany students in this new academic stage. De Camps has called on society to remain attentive to education throughout the entire school period.
As classes progress, educational authorities continue to monitor schools and the necessary conditions to ensure the development of activities. De Camps reiterated that education must be a permanent commitment of the authorities, families, teachers, and all of society.
