Young man dies after being burned while rescuing his son and wife during a fire in Santiago

Santiago. – The young man who suffered third-degree burns on 85% of his body passed away on Saturday night while rescuing his children during a fire that affected his home in the El Semillero 2 sector of the Santiago Oeste municipal district.

The victim is Willy Beltré, 25 years old, who was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the José María Cabral y Báez Regional University Hospital in this city.

Beltré was in a delicate state, connected to mechanical ventilation, as was his wife, Elaine Canela, also 25 years old, who suffered burns on 25% of her body. She was transferred to the Ney Arias Lora Hospital, in Santo Domingo, where she is receiving medical attention.

Meanwhile, the two affected children are admitted to the Dra. Thelma Rosario Burns Children’s Center (CENIQUEM): a baby of just one month old and a three-year-old boy.

The newborn suffered second-degree burns on 16% of her body, with possible inhalation injury, and the boy has similar burns on 10% of his body surface. Both minors are stable, under medical observation.

It is recalled that the incident was recorded on 8th Street in the El Semillero 2 sector, of the Santiago Oeste municipal district, allegedly due to the explosion of a gas cylinder whose valve failed.
