Santo Domingo.- With the aim of modernizing the public lighting system and moving towards a more sustainable energy model, the Dominican Government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mines, launched this Wednesday the National Energy Efficiency Program, which includes the installation of 254,000 latest-generation LED luminaires throughout the country.
The initiative seeks to reduce energy consumption by more than 50% in the areas involved and avoid the annual emission of 34 million tons of pollutants, which represents a large-scale positive environmental impact.
The initiative has financial backing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and will be implemented in coordination with the Electricity Distribution Companies (EDEs).
The president of the Unified Council of EDEs, Celso Marranzini, described the program as “a decisive step towards a more modern, efficient and transparent energy model”.
In addition to energy savings and environmental protection, the program will have a direct effect on the quality of life of citizens.

The modernization of public lighting will contribute to improving safety in streets and public spaces, reducing crime, stimulating night-time commerce and encouraging greater use of the urban environment.

The provinces selected for the program’s implementation have been prioritized due to their tourist vocation or because they register high levels of crime at night.
