Diario Libre is a Dominican newspaper of national circulation that marked a milestone in the history of the country’s journalism by becoming the first free newspaper of the Dominican Republic. History of the newspaper Diario Libre
The newspaper was founded by the businessman Arturo Pellerano under the concept of free distribution, something unprecedented in the country until then. Its launch took place during a gala at the Hotel Jaragua in Santo Domingo, which was attended by internationally renowned figures such as Lech Wałęsa, Mikhail Gorbachev and Óscar Arias, all winners of the Nobel Peace Prize.
From the beginning, Diario Libre broke the mold with a compact, modern, visually appealing, and easy-to-read format. Its first director was Aníbal de Castro, who promoted an innovative editorial model committed to truthfulness and in-depth analysis.
Evolution as a Multiplatform Medium
In 2002, the company launched its official website, www.diariolibre.com, anticipating the growth of digital consumption. Subsequently, in 2009, Diario Libre Metro was presented, a more agile edition focused on users of public transport in Santo Domingo.

Acquisition by the Puntacana Group
On July 24, 2023, Grupo Puntacana acquired all the shares of Diario Libre, marking the beginning of a new stage focused on technological innovation and the expansion of its digital platforms. That same year, Aníbal de Castro was appointed president of the media outlet.
