Santo Domingo.- The Listín Diario newspaper celebrates this August 1st its 137th anniversary, consolidating itself as the newspaper with the longest history in the Dominican Republic and one of the oldest in Latin America.
Founded in 1889, the media outlet has witnessed the country’s main political, social, economic, and cultural events, maintaining a constant presence in the history of Dominican journalism.
As the date is commemorated, in its editorial today, they state that this newspaper has known how to board the fast train of technological transformation and stay on it, adapting its printed content to the need to explain and contextualize truthful and verified information.
They also reiterated their commitment to reporting the truth, questioning authority when necessary, confronting corruption, and unequivocally condemning abuses of any kind.
History
The Listín Diario was born as a maritime newsletter, with the objective of notifying the arrival and departure of vessels in Dominican ports.

The initiative, led by Arturo J. Pellerano Alfau and Julián Atiles, soon evolved into a high-impact journalistic platform. Within a matter of weeks, the small newsletter integrated international news and local analysis, quickly gaining public recognition with a circulation of 50 copies.
The success was such that, in its 28th edition, when it had barely completed its first month of life, the Listín Diario inserted within its usual content a brief summary of news from Europe supplied by the French cable 24 hours after they occurred. Some short items were also released under the heading of “General News,” with the circulation rising to 150 copies.

Its progress over time has been evident. On Wednesday, December 4, 1996, the first version of its internet portal went live, under the domain Listin.com.do. Since then, the newspaper has remained the leader of the Dominican press on the internet.
