Washington.- Four immigrants affected by the raids in Washington and the community organization CASA sued the government of President Donald Trump this Thursday for carrying out immigration arrests “illegal” and have asked a court to stop the raids in the US capital.

The lawsuit also alleges that immigration agents have “systematically” arrested immigrants in Washington, D.C. and that each of the four plaintiffs, two Salvadorans, a Honduran and a Venezuelan, were arrested “indiscriminately” and finally released after it was confirmed that they had pending immigration processes. For its part, CASA, an immigrant rights organization, joined the lawsuit arguing that its members have been affected by the arrests and have had to divert resources from their main social service work to participate in the response to the crisis of detained persons. The lawsuit has asked the court to stop the indiscriminate immigration raids in the American capital, which saw an increase in operations since last August, when President Trump declared a “criminal emergency” to deploy federal agents. “This policy and practice ignore important limits established by Congress for immigration arrests and have sown terror among the immigrant communities and neighborhoods of D.C. Federal agents, like the rest of us, must abide by the law,” said Aditi Shah, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of the District of Columbia. In addition to the ACLU, the plaintiffs are represented by the Amica Center for Immigrant Rights, CASA, the National Immigration Project, the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, and the law firm Covington & Burling LLP. The White House faces similar litigation in Los Angeles, following the mass raids that broke out last June.
