Burkina Faso bans images of impoverished children used to attract clicks

Burkina Faso’s military-led government has banned the use of images and videos of humanitarian aid beneficiaries that could be considered exploitative or degrading, in a move aimed at preventing the country’s poverty from being used to generate attention and clicks online.

The measure also establishes rules on what can be donated and how humanitarian assistance should be provided, with authorities seeking to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign aid.

The restrictions come amid a broader effort by Burkina Faso’s military authorities to promote greater national control over humanitarian programs and how the country is portrayed abroad.
