Bogotá, June 7 (EFE).- Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Saturday called for respecting the “red line” of life, following the shooting attack suffered this Saturday in Bogotá by Senator and presidential candidate from the Uribista (right-wing) party, Miguel Uribe Turbay. “Respect life, that is the red line. Colombia must not kill its children, because they are also our children,” Petro said in a message on his X account.
After lamenting Colombia’s “eternal violence,” Petro expressed his solidarity “to the Uribe family and the Turbay family. I don’t know how to mitigate their pain. It is the pain of a departed mother and of the homeland.”

The attacked politician is one of the presidential candidates of the Uribista Democratic Center party for the 2026 elections and one of the most severe critics of the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, especially for the deterioration of security in the country.
Miguel Uribe Turbay is the son of Diana Turbay, a journalist who was kidnapped and murdered in 1991 by drug traffickers in the service of Pablo Escobar, and grandson of former President Julio César Turbay, who governed the country between 1978 and 1982.
