United States. The Tampa Bay Rays started the second half of the season strongly by thrashing the Baltimore Orioles 11-1 this Friday at George M. Steinbrenner Field, led by an explosive offense spearheaded by Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz.
After a complicated pre-break closing for the All-Star Game —where they lost 12 of their last 16 games— the Rays didn’t need motivational speeches or team meetings. The message was clear, as expressed by manager Kevin Cash: “Our record already said it all. We have to change course, and do it quickly.”
And so they did.
Caminero, who comes from being runner-up in the Home Run Derby, hit two home runs to reach 25 in the season, confirming his status as one of the most explosive young stars in the league. For his part, Yandy Díaz hit the second grand slam of his career, contributing decisively to the large score.
The offensive was completed with a great performance by Chandler Simpson, who went 3-5 with two runs scored, and Jake Mangum, who added a hit, a walk, and a stolen base.
From the mound, Taj Bradley looked dominant with six scoreless innings and six strikeouts, achieving his second scoreless outing of the season. Joe Boyle took charge of maintaining the dominance from the bullpen with two solid innings and a pair of strikeouts.
This strong start comes at a key moment for the Rays, who are in a critical stage leading up to the July 31st Trade Deadline. The team’s president of baseball operations, Erik Neander, already anticipated that the results of these weeks will be decisive for the decisions to be made before the market closes.
