Jazz Chisholm Jr. is one home run away from the historic 30-30; Yankees secure the series at Fenway Park
Boston. – The power and speed phenotype of Jazz Chisholm Jr. keeps the illusion alive for the New York Yankees of entering the history books. The Bahamian player hit his 29th home run of the season this Saturday, staying just one away from joining the exclusive 30-30 club (30 home runs and 30 stolen bases), in the Yankees’ 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
With his three-RBI performance, Chisholm took a firm step towards becoming only the third player in the franchise with a 30-30 season, alongside Bobby Bonds (1975) and Alfonso Soriano (2002 and 2003), reflecting the magnitude of his season.
“It would mean a lot if we managed to win the division and I feel like I helped the team towards that goal,” Chisholm said when asked about the possibility of entering that select group.
Chisholm’s offensive contribution was key: he drove in a run with an infield hit in the first inning, added another with a single to the opposite field in the third, and finally hit his home run to right field in the fifth inning against starter Brayan Bello.
With the victory, the Yankees (83-65) secured the series at Fenway and remained three games behind the Toronto Blue Jays (86-62) in the fight for the American League East Division. Likewise, they took a 2.5-game lead over the Red Sox (81-68) in the race for the Wild Card.
In the mound, Max Fried shined in his third start of the year against Boston, pitching until the sixth inning and controlling the opposing offense until a solo home run by Alex Bregman threw him off his rhythm. Despite the local threat in that inning, Luke Weaver‘s relief stifled the rebellion by striking out two rivals with the bases loaded.
The victory not only solidifies the Yankees in the postseason race, but also brings Chisholm closer to an achievement not seen in the Bronx for more than two decades.
