SANTO DOMINGO.– The Leones del Escogido announced the hiring of right-handed pitcher José Urquidy, who will join the scarlet team for the postseason of the Dominican professional baseball tournament, the Baseball Operations management of the organization reported.

Urquidy, 30 years old, has six seasons of experience in the Major Leagues, where he pitched between 2019 and 2025, recording a record of 27-16, an ERA of 4.00, 1.15 WHIP and 329 strikeouts in 407.1 innings, mainly with the Houston Astros. The Mexican right-hander was part of the Houston team that won the 2022 World Series, standing out with a solid performance against the Philadelphia Phillies by pitching three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four batters in the Fall Classic. “The entry of Urquidy gives us a proven pitcher, with experience in high-demand scenarios. His control, maturity and knowledge of the game strengthen our rotation from the start of the Round Robin, and we trust that he will be a key piece,” said general manager Carlos Peña. During the current fall-winter, Urquidy played with the Venados de Mazatlán in the Mexican Pacific League, where he showed an excellent performance by registering 1.09 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 35 strikeouts in 33.0 innings, with a record of 3-1 and a batting average allowed of .183. The pitcher is expected to be part of the rotation of the 17-time national champions, who will begin their participation in the Round Robin this Saturday, December 27, when they face the Águilas Cibaeñas at 5:00 in the afternoon at the Cibao stadium.
