Pittsburgh, PA. With a solid performance from Paul Skenes on the mound and capitalizing on defensive errors by the opponent, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Toronto Blue Jays this Monday by 5-2 at PNC Park, returning to the winning path after a complicated road trip.
Skenes allowed only two earned runs in six and a third innings, totaling eight strikeouts in 96 pitches, 51 of them four-seam fastballs. The only damage came in the third inning, when Bo Bichette produced a run-scoring single to momentarily give Toronto the lead. With this outing, the star rookie has limited his rivals to two runs or less in 21 of his 26 starts in 2025.
Pittsburgh’s offense responded immediately with a run by Bryan Reynolds on a fielder’s choice play and, in the seventh inning, Henry Davis scored the go-ahead run after a wild pitch. The Pirates extended their lead in the eighth with two additional runs, benefiting from a throwing error by Tyler Heineman and a sacrifice fly by Davis himself.
The bullpen also shone: Evan Sisk earned his first Major League win after retiring the seventh inning in order, while Dennis Santana secured his eighth save of the season with an impeccable ninth.
The Pirates will look to win the series this Tuesday, when Mitch Keller (5-11, 4.13 ERA) faces Max Scherzer (3-2, 3.83 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET at PNC Park.
