Several of them were considered among the best ballplayers of their era, being selected on multiple occasions to the mid-season classic, but various factors—such as controversies, scandals, or the voters’ criteria—have delayed or prevented their entry into the Hall of Fame.

Leading the list are historical figures such as Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Alex Rodriguez, all with careers that place them among the best of all time from a statistical standpoint, although their links to the use of performance-enhancing substances have complicated their election.

Also standing out are names such as Carlos Beltrán, whose candidacy continues to grow despite the controversy over the Astros’ 2017 sign-stealing scandal; Rafael Palmeiro, one of the few members of the 3,000 hits and 500 home runs club; and Billy Wagner, who remained very close to the necessary percentage for election for several years.
