NEW YORK. – The New York Yankees secured their spot in the 2025 postseason on Tuesday night with an electrifying comeback at Yankee Stadium, defeating the White Sox 3-2 thanks to a decisive hit by Panamanian José Caballero in the ninth inning.

The triumph guaranteed the eighth qualification in the last nine years for the New York franchise. In addition, combined with the Blue Jays’ defeat against the Red Sox, the Yankees were only one game away from the lead in the American League East Division.

Brilliant Gil, Punishing Montgomery

Dominican opener Luis Gil looked dominant in his first five innings, shutting out the opponent, but a defensive error opened the door in the sixth inning. After a misunderstanding between Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge on an improbable fly ball by Kyle Teel —with only a 6% chance of becoming a hit according to Statcast—, Colson Montgomery punished with a two-run home run that gave Chicago the lead. Before that, the Yankees had taken the lead in the second inning with a run-scoring double by Austin Wells.

Excitement in the ninth

The local offense squandered opportunities in intermediate innings, such as Ben Rice‘s aggressive run in the fifth, when he was put out trying to extend a single, and the capture of Jazz Chisholm Jr., who had achieved his 31st stolen base of the season. Everything was defined in the bottom of the ninth, when the Yankees, spurred on by the roar of the fans, rallied and defeated the White Sox with Caballero’s hit that unleashed the celebration.
